Refugee passport

General

A refugee passport is a Dutch travel document for refugees.

We only work on an appointment basis. You cannot drop in without an appointment. You can make an appointment by telephone or by using the button above. Appointments are free of charge.

Submitting an application

You can apply for a refugee passport if you have asylum status or a type III or IV residence permit. 

You must come in person to the Town Hall to apply for a refugee passport. Do you wish to apply for a refugee passport for your child? Your child must come with you when you make the application. Children of 12 years and older must collect the requested document in person.

What you need to bring with you

if you are aged 18 and above

  • All of your travel documents.
  • A passport photo which meets the requirements.
  • Your old refugee passport (if you have one) and your valid residence permit.
  • Cash or your bank card.

If you are younger than 18

  • All of your travel documents.
  • A passport photo which meets the requirements.
  • Your old refugee passport (if you have one) and your valid residence permit.
  • Written permission from both parents or from the person who has parental authority: signed copy. You can obtain a consent form from the Customer Contact Centre or you can download one here below.
  • An original identity document for both parents or for the person who has parental authority. Please note: copies are not acceptable. 
  • Cash or your bank card.

Delivery time

Your application will be processed immediately. You can collect your document about 5 working days after your application. You must collect your passport within 3 months of making your application.

We work by appointment only, including collection.

Validity

A refugee passport is valid for at least 1 year and for a maximum of 5 years. You may use your refugee passport for travelling to countries outside the Netherlands. You may not use your refugee passport for travelling to your country of origin.

Urgency

Do you urgently need a passport? You can make an appointment for an urgent application. This will take one working day. You must make an application before 3:00 PM and collect the passport the next working day after 10:00 AM.
