Weekend closure of the Markt in Schagen

General

The weekend closure of the Markt stems from Schagen’s city centre traffic plan. The main aim of the plan is to route traffic around the city centre via the car parks, rather than straight through it. This will create a more pleasant shopping experience, more peace & quiet and space, and a safer, more liveable environment. By introducing the weekend closure, we will already gain experience of a city centre with less motor traffic. In the future, this approach will also play a role in the redevelopment of the Markt and the Gedempte Gracht.

Markt closed at weekends

In practice, this means that the Markt (between ’t Vosje, Gedempte Gracht and Rensgars) will be closed to cars and lorries from Saturday 18:00 until Monday 08:00 through the use of bollards. Parking around the church will not be possible during this time period. Cyclists and pedestrians will still be able to cross the Markt. A traffic regulation order for this measure and all accompanying signage has been published by the municipality. You can find it on the Dutch government website for official publications.

What does this mean for you

Parking along the church is not permitted during the weekend closure. We therefore ask visitors – as well as shop and hospitality employees – not to leave their cars parked on the Markt until the end of Saturday afternoon,. otherwise your car will be stuck there until the closure ends. Signage will be in place to inform people of this new arrangement. All other parking areas in and around the town centre will, of course, remain fully accessible and available throughout the closure.
Residents and visitors of Nieuwstraat and ’t Vosje will be permitted to drive back towards Beethovenlaan via Nieuwstraat during the weekend closure. Normally, this is a one-way street, but this exception will apply during the weekend closure.
